Building a Complex Effects Combinator in Reason and Record [video]

Record LogoComplex mixing and layering of effects can lead to a nice fat sound when filling the stereo field with lush sound design. Propellerhead’s Record is a powerful duo when combined with the infinite capabilities of Reason’s effects routing within a combinator. In this video we take a look at how to build an effects combinator so complex, that layering and mixing effects is only the beginning. We also see how to go about combining those layers to include using a vocoder as a send effect. The possibilities are endless and we hope to spark some creativity in you. Enjoy.

The Creative Process – Your 2 Cents

The Thinker Rabbit

The Thinker?

Everyone has a way they approach songwriting, pre-production, album artwork, etc.  The creative process is how we go from idea or spark of genius to a first draft or even finished product.  Everyone approaches it differently, even if we some have similarities, our individual personalities and experiences make the creative process unique to each of us.  Guidelines or ideas are very helpful to some of us who have trouble getting started.  I give a few pointers in my free e-book “6 Steps to Creating Your Next Album”.  Here are what other artists have to say about approaching the creative process.

I usually use a “Groove-based” approach. I start with a basic rhythm/drum track, fit a tight bassline over the top of it, then build the rest of the instrumentation and arrangement over and around that :)

earth

Earth

Do you make music for the fame?  Are you searching for that ever everlasting attention begotten from rock stardom?  Or maybe you’re on those that are in it for the chicks?  Why do you make music?  If you make music, what motivates you to continue?  Do you have a reason?  Do you know what it is?  For some of us, we may be lost in our musical identity.  We may not even remember why we started, or how to get to where we want to go.  Knowing the why can often reveal the how.  Here are three ideas to help you dig into the inner you and come up with the answers of why you make music.

The Songwriter’s Shopping List – The Tools of the Trade

A mechanic cannot work on a car without a set of tools.  A surgeon cannot perform an operation without a set of tools.  A songwriter cannot properly craft songs that grab attention and demand interest without the proper set of tools.  The following is what I suggest every songwriter have in their toolbox.  Songwriters, these are the tools of your trade.  I actually own every single tool in this list (except the hardcover alternative mentioned below).  Grow your toolbox.  Learn to use your tools properly.  Hone your craft.  Let’s dig in…the book pictures are clickable links.
